The aim of the American Indian Academic Success Program is to attract and retain American Indian students
and create a culturally competent environment within the College. We summarize our mission under three goals:
Attract, Retain Train!
Goal 1: Attract American Indian Students to CHHS Programs. The American Indian Academic Student
Success Program will create the pipeline of potential students through recruitment efforts with tribes
across northern Arizona. We are creating an interest in health profession careers by including American
Indian alumni or our current students in visits to middle and high schools.
Goal 2: Retain American Indian Students Enrolled in CHHS Programs. Our retention efforts create
an environment that supports the cultural and social needs of American Indian students so that they and
their families see NAU as their University.
Goal 3: Provide Cultural Awareness Training for NAU Faculty, Staff and Students. A final goal of
the American Indian Academic Student Success Program is to improve cultural competence throughout the CHHS.
A college-wide, broad-based program cognizant of cultural differences will provide opportunities for
cultural competency education for our faculty, staff and students.
